This is a strange one: a soccer ball gifted by the West Bromwich Boys' Brigade to the Ooldea United Aborigines' Mission. Who knows what became of the ball and the uses to which it was put but it really is a striking photo. And those hats . . . .

The hats worn by the boys are forage or "pillbox" hats commonly worn by some Victorian and early 20th century British military units and adopted by the BB and used up until thirties when a Glengarry style cap was adopted . I am surprised to see the pillbox style in use in 1951 but I dare say the mission got the uniforms as hand me downs.
